The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, delivered a scathing assessment of regional stability to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, accusing Israel of pursuing a policy of "perpetual war" while lacking any genuine vision for peace.

During a high-level session in New York addressing the situation in the Middle East, Aboul Gheit warned that the Arab region is currently experiencing a state of extreme tension fueled by the ongoing conflict and its devastating humanitarian consequences.

Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said in a statement that Aboul Gheit identified the continued Israeli occupation of Palestinian and Arab lands as the primary driver of instability in the region.

"Israel is adopting a policy of 'continuous war' to maintain military confrontation on multiple fronts," Aboul Gheit told the council. He accused the Israeli government of using security pretexts to intensify "provocative policies" involving land seizures and unprecedented settlement expansion in the West Bank.

The Arab League chief further criticized the Israeli government for failing to commit to ceasefire agreements or international peace proposals, including the plan put forward by U.S. President Joe Biden. He characterized the current Israeli leadership as a direct threat to regional coexistence, stating their only agenda is "protracted conflict."

Aboul Gheit also turned his attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, reaffirming the Arab League's support for UNRWA. He praised the "extraordinary resilience" of the Palestinian people in maintaining basic educational and health services amid the rubble and destruction.

Beyond the Palestinian territories, Aboul Gheit addressed the escalating tensions in Lebanon and the Horn of Africa. He called for a mutual and comprehensive cessation of hostilities in Lebanon, conditioned on a full Israeli withdrawal from occupied Lebanese lands to allow displaced citizens to return home.
