Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, condemned in the strongest terms the visit by the President of the northwestern region of the Federal Republic of Somalia, the so-called “Somaliland,” to occupied Jerusalem and the inauguration of a building designated as an “embassy.”
He stressed that this step is null and void and without any legal effect, describing it as a desperate attempt to undermine the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia and its territorial integrity, in violation of the Charter of the United Nations and the rules of international law. He further characterised it as a provocation to the Somali people and the Arab, African, and Islamic worlds, particularly in light of the crimes being committed by the occupying authorities against the Palestinian people.
Mr. Aboul Gheit called upon the authorities in the region to reconsider this policy and to refrain from jeopardising the future of the region and the interests of its inhabitants through arrangements that serve external agendas that do not advance the interests of the Somali people.
He also urged them not to tie the region’s future to the interests of the Israeli occupying Power, whose policies are based on exploiting and deepening divisions among brethren in order to undermine regional stability and expand its military and political influence.
The Secretary-General further urged the authorities to uphold Somali national identity and to engage, with the courage and responsibility of statesmen, in a serious dialogue with the various components of the Somali state, building upon the shared social, historical, tribal, and religious bonds that unite the Somali people, with a view to fulfilling their aspirations for peace, security, and stability.
For his part, Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, reaffirmed the League of Arab States’ full solidarity with the Federal Republic of Somalia and its steadfast support for its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
He recalled that, at its extraordinary meeting on 28 December 2025, the Council of the League had considered Israeli activities involving the northwestern region of the Federal Republic of Somalia to constitute a threat to Arab national security and to peace, security, and stability in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Horn of Africa.
He further noted that the Secretary-General remains committed to mobilising a unified Arab, African, and international position to confront these developments and to safeguard the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia and the stability of the region.
