Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, expressed his condemnation in the strongest terms of Israel’s appointment of an ambassador to the northwestern region of the Federal Republic of Somalia, the so-called “Somaliland.” He affirmed that this step is null and void, illegal, and constitutes a dangerous escalation and a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, as well as a clear breach of the Charter of the United Nations and the rules of international law, and a measure devoid of any legal effect.
Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, recalled the firm Arab position expressed by the Council of the League of Arab States at its extraordinary meeting on 28 December 2025, which categorically rejected any form of recognition or engagement with the region outside the framework of Somali sovereignty. He noted that the Israeli moves represent a direct threat to Arab national security and to peace and security in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Horn of Africa, and constitute a serious attempt to reshape the geopolitical landscape of the region in a manner that threatens freedom of navigation and international trade.
Roshdy further explained that Israel’s persistence in this approach reflects a policy of disregard for the principles of international law and international legitimacy, and a determination to place its political, security, and military agendas above any legal or moral considerations. He reaffirmed that the Somali people are one people, sharing a common origin, history, and a cohesive social, tribal, and religious fabric, and that the Somali state, since gaining independence, has chosen the path of a unified national state based on the rejection of divisions and factionalism.
It is noteworthy that Mr. Aboul Gheit has addressed letters to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the President of the Security Council, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, with a view to coordinating a firm Arab, African, and international position to confront this flagrant violation and counter Israeli attempts to destabilise the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.
