On Wednesday, Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, held a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri, in Cairo, where they discussed the latest developments with regard to the formation of the Lebanese government.
Aboul Gheit's meeting with Hariri comes as part of latter's visit to Egypt.
In a statement, an official source at the Arab League said that Aboul Gheit, during the meeting, affirmed that the League is keeping pace with Lebanon in this very critical period as was the case in previous pivotal stations in the modern history of Lebanon.
Aboul Gheit also stressed the League's supportive stance to Lebanon, especially in light of the unprecedented hardships being suffered by the Lebanese people as a result of the political paralysis and economic deterioration facing the country.
He also indicated that the Lebanese people expect their leaders to unify their efforts and fulfil their duties with a view to serving their interests.
Aboul Gheit affirmed that "saving Lebanon is a top priority for the Arab League at this stage, calling on all political parties to put aside differences to uphold the national interest of the country, and to provide the necessary support for the success of the Prime Minister-designate in forming a government of specialists, whose mission is to avoid dragging the country in more crises.
Earlier today, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi will receive Hariri at El-Etehadiya palace, according to Presidency Spokesman Bassam Rady.
During his visit, Hariri will meet a number of Egyptian senior officials including Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry to discuss the latest development in Lebanon, and the whole region as well.
On Tuesday, Egyptian Ambassador to Beirut Yasser Allawi handed Lebanon’s President Michel Aoun a message from President Sisi, expressing his wishes for Lebanon for continued progress and prosperity.
