Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received on 18 May Dr. Ashraf Al-Awar, Minister of Jerusalem Affairs of the State of Palestine, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League in Cairo. The meeting addressed the latest developments relating to the situation in occupied Jerusalem and the ongoing Israeli violations against the Palestinian people.

Gamal Roshdy, spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit listened to the Palestinian minister who spoke about the scale of the daily suffering endured by Jerusalemites under Israeli occupation policies, and the escalating measures targeting the people, land, and holy sites of the holy city through policies of home demolitions, forced displacement, and systematic restrictions imposed on residents, in addition to repeated assaults on Islamic and Christian holy sites, the imposition of restrictions on freedom of worship, and the closure of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, in flagrant violation of the sanctity of holy places and international law.

The spokesperson conveyed the Secretary-General's condemnation of the ongoing campaign of repression carried out by the occupying Power in Jerusalem, as well as the accelerated attempts to erase the city's Arab identity and alter its historical and demographic character in a manner that undermines the prospects for peace and exacerbates tension and instability in the region.

During the meeting, Mr. Aboul Gheit reaffirmed the steadfast position of the League of Arab States in support of the steadfastness of the Palestinian people in occupied Jerusalem and the League's categorical rejection of all unilateral and unlawful Israeli measures aimed at imposing a new fait accompli in the holy city. He stressed that East Jerusalem will remain the capital of the State of Palestine and that its legal and historical status cannot be undermined or altered by force.
