Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, held a high-level telephone conversation on Tuesday with Helen McEntee, Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade. The discussion focused on urgent regional developments, with the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip taking center stage.
According to Jamal Rushdie, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, the call served as a platform to review the latest updates in Gaza, as well as the ongoing conflicts in Sudan and Somalia. Both leaders expressed deep concern over the persistent security and humanitarian challenges facing the region.
Commending Ireland’s Pro-Palestine Stance Aboul Gheit expressed his profound appreciation for Ireland’s steadfast support of the Palestinian cause on the international stage. He specifically lauded Ireland's recent formal recognition of an independent Palestinian state—a move shared by several other European nations—as a courageous step toward justice and regional stability.
International Initiatives and Diplomatic Coordination The two officials explored new international arrangements and diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Aboul Gheit used the occasion to strongly condemn ongoing Israeli practices in the occupied territories, describing them as obstacles to peace.
In response, Minister McEntee praised the pivotal role of the Arab League in fostering stability and peace across the Middle East. She reaffirmed Ireland’s unwavering commitment to defending the rights of the Palestinian people and continuing its advocacy within the European Union and the United Nations.
The phone call took place shortly before the Irish Minister’s departure from Cairo, underscoring the active diplomatic coordination between the Arab League and European partners.
