Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, participated in the opening session of the Regional Conference on International Judicial Cooperation in Combating Terrorism, held in Beirut under the patronage and in the presence of the President of the Lebanese Republic. The event was organized by the League of Arab States, in cooperation with the European Union and the Lebanese Ministry of Justice.
In his opening remarks, Aboul Gheit emphasized the importance of strengthening the strategic partnership between the League of Arab States and the European Union, especially in the field of judicial cooperation and counter-terrorism. He noted that the Criminal Justice Project, jointly implemented by both sides, serves as a distinguished example of an integrated approach to tackling common security challenges in the region.
Aboul Gheit also reaffirmed the League’s commitment to supporting Arab countries in developing effective legal and institutional frameworks to combat terrorism while maintaining full respect for human rights and international law.
League Spokesperson Gamal Roshdy stated that Aboul Gheit commended Arab governments’ efforts to repatriate and rehabilitate former fighters and their families, calling for the establishment of national mechanisms for prosecution, rehabilitation, and reintegration. He stressed that the League has consistently advocated for comprehensive strategies to prevent the resurgence of extremist ideologies and to break the cycles of radicalization.
Roshdy added that the Secretary-General praised ongoing Arab initiatives aimed at enhancing regional cooperation in security, legal, and judicial fields. He underscored that these efforts seek to strengthen institutional coordination among Arab states and promote innovative mechanisms to address evolving challenges, in close collaboration with regional and international partners.
