Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit, received today, Monday, Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. They addressed the latest developments regarding refugee issues in the Arab countries.
Gamal Rushdi, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General, said that Aboul Gheit listened to an explanation by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees about the conditions of refugees in the Arab region, especially the Sudanese who left Sudan after the outbreak of armed confrontations. The spokesman explained that the meeting touched on the visit of the the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to the Egyptian-Sudanese border and the Qastal crossing, which represents the main gateway for Sudanese refugees to cross into Egypt, and the cooperation offered by the Egyptian authorities in dealing with the flows of Sudanese refugees, whose number has exceeded 160,000 since the outbreak of the armed conflict.
During the meeting, Aboul Gheit stressed the importance of the UNHCR's support to countries that receive refugees.
The Spokesman indicated that the meeting also dealt with the situation of Syrian refugees in various Arab countries, particularly in Lebanon and Jordan.
