Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, expressed his deep regret over the obstruction of a draft resolution submitted by the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations Security Council concerning freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Mr. Aboul Gheit conveyed his appreciation for the considerable efforts and flexibility demonstrated by the Bahraini delegation in seeking to secure the broadest possible support for the draft, stressing the importance of continuing Arab and international efforts in the same direction.
Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that the draft resolution aimed to address Iran’s violations of international law and its threats to maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, noting that such threats undermine international peace and security. He added that it is regrettable that the Security Council was unable to discharge its responsibilities in this regard due to the use of the veto by two permanent members.
The spokesperson further conveyed Mr. Aboul Gheit’s assertion that the international community is, at this stage, required to coordinate efforts aimed at safeguarding commercial navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, particularly as its disruption—such as is currently occurring—inflicts significant harm on the global economy
