The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, expressed his full solidarity with the Lebanese government and its people on Wednesday, following what he described as brutal Israeli aggression against the country.
In a telephone call with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, the Arab League chief reaffirmed the organization’s support for Lebanon as it faces an escalating military situation. Through his official spokesperson, Gamal Roshdy, Aboul Gheit issued a stinging condemnation of the Israeli strikes in the strongest possible terms, highlighting the heavy toll on the civilian population.
Roshdy stated that the ongoing attacks have resulted in hundreds of deaths and injuries among innocent civilians, characterizing the military actions as a flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law. The spokesperson emphasized that such violence undermines the basic tenets of global legal frameworks designed to protect non-combatants.
During the discussions, Aboul Gheit warned that the international community must be alert to what he described as Israeli attempts to sabotage diplomatic understandings aimed at restoring regional stability. He accused Israel of intentionally "igniting the situation" to derail peace efforts.
The Secretary-General concluded by calling for immediate and serious international pressure on Israel to halt its military operations. He stressed that a ceasefire is the only way to prevent the region from sliding once again into a self-perpetuating cycle of violence and destruction.
