Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Saturday condemned "highly extremist" statements made by U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, after the diplomat reportedly claimed Israel has a right to control the Middle East based on religious texts.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Aboul Gheit described the remarks as "inconsistent with the fundamental principles of diplomacy" and contrary to logic. The Arab League head warned that such rhetoric contradicts long-standing U.S. policies and appears aimed at appealing to right-wing audiences in Israel.
The League further cautioned that these statements serve only to "inflame sentiments" and stir religious tension at a critical time when international efforts are focused on implementing a Gaza peace agreement. Aboul Gheit emphasized that such discourse undermines the opportunity to launch a serious political process toward lasting regional peace.
