Abou Zeid Meets with 1st Egyptian Mayor in Canada

CAIRO, April 5 (SEE) - Egyptian Ambassador to Canada met Thursday with figures of Egyptian expatriates in Montreal and first Egyptian Mayor in Canada.

During his visit to Québec province, Ambassador Ahmed Abou Zeid held a meeting with dozens of Egyptian expats at the General Consulate’s Culture Office in Montreal.

The meeting was honored to be attended by General Consul Hossam Moharam and Cultural Office’s Head Dr. Mohamed Hamza.

Meeting at the Cultural Office

Abou Zeid delivered a speech and stressed the importance of strengthening bonds among all Egyptian communities across Canada.

It’s estimated that Canada embraces about 300.000 Egyptians.

The ambassador hailed the Egyptians’ behavior in Canada and described them as a linking bridge between Cairo and Ottawa.

“Egypt is keen on boosting ties between second and third generations of expats and their homeland,” Abou Zeid said. “Cairo is eager to benefit from those young generations’ skills in the ongoing comprehensive development operation that Egypt is witnessing.”

He also urged the Egyptian community’s figures to organize activities that let Canadians know more about the Egyptian culture and contribution in human civilization.

During the meeting, Abou Zeid answered dozens of questions, before witnessing a music concert on the occasion of the Arab Music Day.

First Egyptian Mayor in Canada

In the meantime, the Egyptian ambassador held a meeting with Dourine Assaad, mayor of Brossard city of Quebec.

Assaad is the first Egyptian expatriate who assumes such a high-profile post in Canada. Also, she is the first woman in 30 years to be appointed mayor in Brossard city.

Abou Zeid and Assaad discussed the situation of the Egyptians living in her province.

According to Canadian media reports, Assaad, a mathematician and businesswoman, was a Brossard Party candidate, and was elected with 39 percent of the vote in Nov., 2017.

Having graduated from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer of Montreal University, Assaad served as councilor of Brossard city in 2009.
