Egypt's Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mohamed Abou El-Enein, lauded the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) as a "new era" for global cooperation in addressing climate change. He commended the UAE's exceptional hosting of the event and expressed his pride in the strong bilateral relations between Egypt and the UAE.
"COP28 has marked a new era in global cooperation on climate change," Abou El-Enein said in a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM). “The discussions and pledges made at the conference have demonstrated a renewed commitment to taking effective action to combat climate change. The UAE's hosting of the event has been remarkable, and I am confident that its achievements and milestones will have a lasting impact.”
Abu El-Enein further asserted, "The once-pledged commitment of $100 billion annually towards climate change mitigation projects is no longer adequate. Today, the minimum requirement for this battle demands a trillion dollars. We are discussing sustainable agriculture and transportation, which are the lifeblood of the entire world."
He also pointed to the achievements accomplished at the COP27, which Egypt hosted in Sharm El-Sheikh last year, expecting that new effective initiatives for green sustainability and energy transition will be launched during the coming days of COP28.
Abu Al-Enein called on the developed countries most responsible for climate change to assume their responsibilities in finding climate solutions, and to provide the necessary support and funding to maintain the goal of keeping the planet’s temperature rise to 1.5 degrees by 2050.
The Egyptian parliamentarian considered the global trend for more investments in renewable energy a safe and effective path to support global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and preserve the Planet, noting that Egypt received inquiries from more than 25 international companies to invest in green hydrogen after announcing the enactment of the necessary legislation in this field.
