Participants in the second meeting of the enlarged bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, Monday in Rabat, stressed the importance of cooperation among the countries of the Mediterranean basin in order to achieve stability and common prosperity.
The participants in this meeting, which was held at the headquarters of the House of Representatives, called for launching a serious discussion among the countries of the north and south of the Mediterranean in order to address issues of interest to the region and to develop new visions to revive this organization and give it a new breath that enables it to respond to the challenges including the sustainable development and confronting the phenomenon of illegal immigration, in addition to the security challenges and the energy crisis.
In this regard, Mr. Rachid Talbi Alami, Moroccan speaker of the House of Representatives and President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, called for establishing partnership mechanisms to confront the serious challenges facing the Euro-Mediterranean region.
“Let us build new rooted parliamentary policies and visions, and let us strive for partnership mechanisms that are compatible with the successive incidents and the serious challenges we face,” said Mr. Talbi Alami.
On his part, Egypt's parliament Deputy Speaker Mohamed Abou El-Enein called on the countries of northern Mediterranean to increase the volume of investments in the southern, especially in vital infrastructure and energy projects, which would reduce illegal immigration and add value to the wealth of region.
Mr. Abou El-Enein drew attention to the danger and importance of the current stage in light of the unconventional challenges experienced by the world and the region, including climate change, the energy crisis, food security and the severe shortage of supply chains, calling on the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union to restore its pioneering and developmental roles to serve the countries and peoples of the region.
