Member of Parliament Mohamed Abou El Enein, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, has expressed his deepest condolences over the passing of Mofid Shehab, one of Egypt’s most prominent legal figures and a leading authority in constitutional and international law in the Arab world.
In a statement, Abou El Enein extended his sincere sympathies to Shehab’s family, colleagues, and students, describing the late scholar as a national symbol of academic excellence and public service. He noted that Shehab’s career combined rigorous scholarship with an unwavering commitment to the Egyptian state and its institutions.
Mofid Shehab previously served as Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and as President of Cairo University, where he played a major role in advancing academic standards and strengthening Egypt’s higher education system. He also held the position of Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Legal Affairs, contributing to legislative development and institutional reform.
Abou El Enein highlighted Shehab’s historic role in defending Egypt’s sovereignty during the Taba arbitration case, in which he was part of the national legal effort that successfully secured the return of the territory through international law. This achievement remains one of the most significant milestones in modern Egyptian legal and diplomatic history.
The statement stressed that Shehab’s passing marks the loss of a distinguished scholar whose intellectual legacy, legal writings, and public service will continue to influence generations of jurists, academics, and policymakers across Egypt and the Arab region.
Abou El Enein concluded by praying that God grant the late professor mercy and eternal peace, and that his family and loved ones be given strength and patience during this time of grief
