Egypt has been unanimously elected to chair the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM) for the first time in over 15 years. The decision was made during a two-day session held in Spain, attended by heads and representatives of parliaments from 38 countries, including King Felipe VI of Spain.
In a historic move, Egyptian MP and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mohamed Abou El-Enein, was elected by unanimous vote to lead the PA-UfM, reflecting broad international support for Egypt’s leadership in promoting regional cooperation and stability.
The President of the Spanish Parliament, Francina Armengol, officially announced Egypt’s leadership of the new parliamentary term, which will begin in June, succeeding Spain’s term in the role.
Confidence in President El-Sisi’s Regional Leadership
In her remarks, Armengol praised Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi for his pivotal role in guiding Egypt and advancing peace efforts in the Middle East. She also voiced Spain’s support for Egypt’s reconstruction initiative in Gaza and its commitment to a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The vote of confidence from 38 parliamentary leaders underscores growing recognition of Egypt’s diplomatic role in the region and its efforts to mediate conflict and foster sustainable development across the Mediterranean.
