Mohamed Abou El Enein, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, has warned that the ongoing crises in the Middle East represent a decisive test for the credibility of the international system, urging immediate action to halt the violence and prevent further regional escalation.

Speaking after high-level parliamentary consultations, Abou El Enein said the situation in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, alongside the broader conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, has reached a critical point that can no longer be sustained. He stressed that the continuation of these tragedies is morally and legally unacceptable and risks deepening instability across the region and beyond.

He called for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and a comprehensive diplomatic process aimed at ending the occupation and laying the groundwork for a just and lasting peace. He emphasized that de-escalation must be pursued through inclusive dialogue that addresses the root causes of conflict rather than temporary arrangements.

Abou El Enein also highlighted the importance of strengthening the role of national parliaments in decisions related to war and peace, including tighter oversight of arms exports and greater accountability in foreign policy. He underlined the need to activate parliamentary tools such as early-warning mechanisms, mediation efforts, and joint fact-finding missions to help protect civilians and reduce the risk of further escalation.

He warned that the current wave of conflicts exposes deeper flaws in the international system, particularly in the enforcement of international law and the protection of human rights. He added that without a stronger commitment to accountability, the cycle of violence will continue to undermine both regional and global stability.

Abou El Enein concluded by calling for coordinated international efforts to uphold legal and ethical standards, support diplomatic solutions, and work toward a more balanced and stable order in the Middle East.
