The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul El Gheit, affirmed, on Wednesday, that the League adheres to the main principles of the Palestinian cause, which include an explicit international law and the UN Security Council.

Aboul Gheit stressed during a phone call with the United Nations Special Coordinator, Nikolai Mladenov, that these principles are with full Arab consensus, and with the support of the international community and the United Nations.

An official source at the Arab League said that the conversation between Aboul Gheit and the UN Special Coordinator tackled the situation in the Gaza Strip.

The two sides agreed on the importance of avoiding escalation and working to ensure the continuation of the arrangements recently reached between Hamas and Israel, in a way that prevents the situation from deteriorating or exploding within a short period of time.

The source pointed out that Aboul Gheit and Mladenov agreed on the importance of working in the next stage to fix the determinants of a peaceful settlement between Palestine and Israel based on the two-state solution and ending the occupation, and the establishment of a viable Palestinian state on the borders of 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
