Abdel Wahab Abdel Razik, former head of the Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC), and chairman of Mostakbal Watan (Nation's future) was named as Egypt's senate speaker on Sunday during the inaugural procedural session of the Upper House of parliament.

Meanwhile, Egypt's newly-elected senators took the constitutional oath during the opening meeting.

Today's session is headed by by Galal Haridi, 91, a co-founder of the Guardians of the Nation Party, in his capacity as the Senate's most senior member.

Two young members also join Haridi in running the opening session.

The opening session began with reading out a number of decrees related to the senate formation, including Egypt's president Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi's two decrees on holding the inaugural session on October 18, and the names of 100 appointees.

Members are now electing the speaker's two deputies in a secret ballot in line with article 4 of the Senate's law (141/2020).
