The official Palestinian news agency, WAFA, reported on Saturday that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called for an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council to address the "bloody massacre" committed by the Israeli army in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.
More than 200 Palestinians were killed and at least 400 injured during an Israeli military operation in the Nuseirat camp aimed at rescuing four Israeli hostages, according to Palestinian television.
Ambulance crews recovered dozens of bodies, including children, from the streets and the central market area hit by shelling. Hospitals were overwhelmed with critically injured patients. Videos from Nuseirat shared on social media show numerous casualties in one of the markets.
In the operation, an officer from the Israeli Yamam unit, involved in the hostage rescue mission in central Gaza's Nuseirat area, was also killed.
Israeli media reported that the Yamam unit officer sustained severe injuries during the operation to free the four hostages but succumbed to his wounds shortly afterward.
