After a tough year filled with many changes for the movie theater business, the North American box office is finally showing signs of life again as Paramount’s “A Quiet Place II” roared to $57 million over Memorial Day Weekend.

“A Quiet Place II“, the sequel to the smash-hit 2018 movie starring husband-wife duo John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, earned $48 million between Friday and Sunday, exceeding expectations and posting the biggest three-day haul of the pandemic era.

The Paramount movie is currently playing in 3,726 venues and is expected to generate $58 million through Memorial Day on Monday.

This is a sign that cinemas are back after more than a year of pandemic era closures, capacity restrictions, and skittish customers.

The sequel is written and directed by Krasinki and sees original cast members Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe reprising their roles.

The plot centers around the remaining members of the Abbott family— Evelyn (Blunt) and her children, Regan (Millicent Simmonds), Marcus (Noah Jupe), and a newborn baby— while they continue to live in silence and hide from creatures that hunt sound, this time while facing the terrors of the outside world.

“A Quiet Place Part II” was initially set to be released in March 2020. The movie’s first release date delay occurred in the aftermath of the global coronavirus pandemic. At the time, the studio opted to delay the movie during the period of time when it was still unclear how widespread or long-term the pandemic would be.

Earlier this year, Paramount delayed the post-apocalyptic thriller to Sept. 17 for a theatrical release, after the sequel was initially pushed from Sept. 4, 2020, to April 23, 2021.
