The World Food Programme (WFP) has reported that approximately nine million people in Malawi are facing the devastating effects of floods and droughts caused by the El Niño phenomenon.
This climatic event has ravaged crops, pushing hunger levels to crisis proportions.
According to a statement from Reena Ghelani, the UN Coordinator for Climate Crisis Response to El Niño, the drought induced by El Niño has severely impacted the maize crop this season.
The anticipated result is a 45% decrease in production, exacerbating food insecurity across the country.
Ghelani warned that by the end of the year, 40% of Malawi's population could experience acute hunger due to the prolonged drought.
Moreover, around 14,000 people have been displaced by floods and landslides in the northern region of the country.
Malawi has declared a state of disaster and called for the implementation of a National Response Plan, which requires $449 million in funding.
Neighboring countries Zambia and Zimbabwe have also declared national emergencies related to drought conditions.
