Nine people were killed and ten others injured in a devastating road accident in Algeria’s Beni Abbès province in the country’s southwest, authorities said.
The crash occurred after a passenger bus veered off the road and overturned on National Road No. 50 while traveling toward the city of Béchar. The incident took place within the municipality and district of Tabelbala.
Algeria’s Civil Defense said emergency teams responded to the scene at around 1:50 pm, providing first aid to the injured before transporting them to a local hospital. Some of the victims were reported to be in critical condition. An official investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances and causes of the accident.
Roads in southwestern Algeria, particularly National Road No. 50, are known for frequent traffic accidents due to long distances, difficult terrain, and heavy interprovincial bus traffic.
Algeria records high numbers of fatal road accidents each year despite awareness campaigns and increased traffic enforcement. Authorities say excessive speed, driver fatigue, and poor vehicle conditions are among the leading causes.
Officials continue to stress the need for improved road safety measures and infrastructure upgrades as part of ongoing efforts to reduce the number of deadly crashes across the country.
