At least nine children and two adults were injured on Saturday evening when a car crashed into an outdoor birthday party in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., before the driver fled the scene, according to US authorities.
Bladensburg Police and the Prince George’s County Fire and Emergency Services Department said a young girl and a small boy sustained serious injuries in the collision.
Seven other children and two adults were also hurt, though their injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening.
Police confirmed that the children were between two and nine years old. The incident occurred along Maryland Route 450 in Bladensburg when the vehicle veered off the road and struck the gathering.
Authorities said the driver got out of the car and ran away, and a search is underway to locate him. Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the vehicle leaving the roadway.
A video shared on social media showed a white party tent with its front section torn open on a lawn outside a residential home, highlighting the extent of the crash’s impact.
