Eighty-five countries and several international organizations have condemned new Israeli measures aimed at expanding its presence in the West Bank, warning that the plans violate international law and threaten prospects for peace.
In a joint statement, the signatories strongly denounced what they described as unilateral Israeli decisions designed to expand what they called an unlawful presence in the West Bank.
The statement urged Israel to reverse the measures immediately and reaffirmed firm opposition to any form of annexation.
Among the countries that endorsed the declaration were Germany, France, China and Russia. The United States did not join the statement.
The signatories reiterated their rejection of any actions aimed at altering the demographic composition, character or legal status of the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem.
They warned that such measures undermine ongoing efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region and jeopardize the possibility of a negotiated settlement to end the conflict.
According to media reports, the Israeli government has approved a proposal that would make it easier for Israeli settlers to purchase land in the West Bank. Analysts say the move could have far reaching implications for Palestinian communities and the future status of the territory.
The coordinated diplomatic response reflects growing international concern over developments in the West Bank and their potential impact on regional stability, international law and the viability of a two-state solution.
