At least eight workers were killed, and six others seriously injured after an explosion and massive molten steel spill triggered a devastating fire at a steel plant in the Indian city of Visakhapatnam.
The accident occurred at around 4:15 p.m. local time when a crane carrying containers of molten steel reportedly collapsed, releasing steel heated to nearly 1,500 degrees Celsius and sparking a rapid blaze across the facility.
Authorities said several victims were burned beyond recognition, complicating identification efforts. The injured workers, many suffering burns over more than 70% of their bodies, were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Labor unions have called for an urgent investigation, citing possible safety failures, aging equipment, and inadequate maintenance as potential causes of the disaster.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the victims' families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
The tragedy is the latest in a series of deadly industrial accidents in India, where workplace safety concerns continue to draw scrutiny.
