At least eight soldiers were killed in an explosion targeting a military armored vehicle in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno State, highlighting the continued security challenges facing the region.

The incident occurred on Sunday when an improvised explosive device detonated as the armored vehicle was passing through a remote area. The blast struck along the road linking the towns of Gubio and Damasak, a corridor frequently targeted by armed groups.

According to security assessments, the attack was carried out by fighters affiliated with Islamic State West Africa Province, who reportedly planted the explosive device and detonated it when the soldiers stopped on the roadway.

Initial reports confirmed the deaths of eight soldiers, while subsequent assessments indicated that the death toll may have risen to nine. Several other troops were also believed to have sustained injuries, though the full extent of casualties has yet to be officially confirmed.

Borno State has remained the epicenter of insurgent activity in northeastern Nigeria for more than a decade, with militant groups repeatedly targeting military patrols, civilian convoys, and local communities despite ongoing counterinsurgency operations.

The latest attack underscores the persistent threat posed by armed groups in the region and the ongoing risks faced by Nigerian security forces operating in volatile areas. Military operations continue as authorities seek to secure key routes and prevent further attacks.
