At least eight Pakistani soldiers were killed and 35 others injured after militants launched a deadly overnight assault on a security post near the border with Afghanistan, according to security officials.
The attack took place in the Bajaur region of northwestern Pakistan, where militants reportedly used a drone before ramming an explosives-laden vehicle into the military compound.
Officials said the massive blast destroyed large sections of the security facility, while armed attackers stormed the site and opened fire indiscriminately after the explosion.
Images from the area showed extensive destruction, with parts of the building reduced to rubble and sections heavily burned.
Security officials stated that Pakistani forces responded immediately and killed all militants involved in the assault.
The attack follows a series of recent militant operations that have killed nearly 30 people in recent days, raising fears of renewed tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement sent to journalists.
Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Taliban government in Kabul of harboring Pakistani militants and separatist fighters linked to the Balochistan Liberation Army, accusations the Afghan Taliban deny.
Relations between the two neighboring countries have deteriorated in recent months following Pakistani airstrikes inside Afghanistan earlier this year targeting alleged militant hideouts, triggering some of the worst cross-border clashes in years.
