79 Killed in Roof Collapse in Dominican Republic

The death toll from the collapse of a nightclub roof in the Dominican Republic’s capital, Santo Domingo, has risen to 79, according to Juan Manuel Méndez, head of the country's Emergency Operations Center.

Rescue teams spent several hours searching for survivors trapped beneath the rubble after the roof of the popular Jet Set nightclub suddenly gave way. Politicians and athletes were reportedly among the attendees when the tragic incident occurred.

Authorities stated it is still too early to determine the cause of the collapse, but investigations are underway. Emergency crews continue their operations, with Méndez emphasizing that many of those trapped under the debris may still be alive, and the authorities will not stop until every person is accounted for.

Dozens of clubgoers sustained various injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Among the injured is renowned merengue singer Ruby Pérez, who was performing live when the roof collapsed.
