A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Tonga in the South Pacific on Tuesday, according to the US Geological Survey.
The quake occurred at a depth of approximately 237 kilometers (148 miles), a level that typically reduces the intensity felt at the surface compared to shallower earthquakes.
The epicenter was located offshore, about 153 kilometers (95 miles) west of Neiafu, the country’s second-largest city.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as further assessments are conducted.
