Ireland continues to deal with widespread power outages following the devastation caused by Storm Eowyn.
A week after the storm hit, 74,000 customers remain without electricity, and approximately 1,000 remain without water.
Prime Minister Micheál Martin highlighted the urgent need for the country to improve its resilience to frequent storms, which have become increasingly common and severe.
The outages are concentrated in the northwest, affecting areas such as Galway, Leitrim, Cavan, and Mayo.
The Irish electricity supply board has indicated that it could take until Thursday to restore power to all affected customers, with more complex repair work expected in the next phase of recovery.
During a meeting in Cork, Martin discussed the ongoing impact of the storm and the steps needed to better prepare for future events.
Given the increasing frequency and intensity of storms in recent years, he emphasized that substantial investment in Ireland’s electricity infrastructure is necessary.
Martin acknowledged the significant role of climate change in these weather patterns, stating that the country must adapt to the challenges posed by such storms. He warned that similar extreme weather events are likely to occur in the coming years.
