The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in cooperation with the European Union assisted over 73 Somali illegal migrants who were stranded in Libya to return home, according to IOM on Thursday.
The IOM announced that 11891 immigrants were intercepted and returned to Libya in 2020, comparing to 9225 in 2019.
In a statement, the organization said that 811 women and 711 children have been intercepted this year. 316 migrants have died, and 417 others have been lost at the Mediterranean in 2020, compared to 270 migrants and 992 deaths in 2019.
The chaos in Libya has turned its coasts into a preferred departure point for Illegal migrants who want to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.
The IOM has reiterated that Libya is not a safe port for immigrants to land. Thousands of those rescued at sea or upon their arrest by the Coast Guard are still being held in overcrowded detention centers in Libya.
