The United Nations has reported that women and children make up nearly 70% of the casualties in the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza between November 2023 and April 2024.
According to the UN’s detailed analysis, approximately 70% of the 8,119 confirmed deaths in the first six months of the war were women and children, out of a total of 34,500 people reported killed during this period.
This devastating toll highlights the disproportionate impact of the conflict on Gaza’s most vulnerable populations.
In addition to the growing death toll, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reiterated the urgent need for civilian protection, especially in northern Gaza, where the situation remains dire.
In recent developments, the Israeli authorities issued new orders for residents to evacuate parts of northern Gaza and other areas in the Gaza governorates, further escalating the humanitarian crisis.
These evacuations come amid intensifying military operations, with many civilians caught in the crossfire and facing increasingly dangerous conditions.
Since the conflict began on October 7, 2023, over 43,000 people have been killed in Gaza, with more than two-thirds of buildings either completely or partially destroyed.
This devastation has led to a catastrophic humanitarian emergency, affecting access to necessities such as food, water, and medical care.
The UN has called for immediate measures to protect civilians and halt the destruction of essential infrastructure in Gaza. With the scale of the loss of life and destruction continuing to grow, international bodies are urging both sides to adhere to international humanitarian law and ensure that civilians are safeguarded.
