At least seven Nigerian soldiers were killed and several others injured after terrorists launched a coordinated attack on a military base in northern Nigeria, military sources reported on Saturday.
The assault targeted a base in the village of Ngamdu, located about 100 kilometers from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. The attackers used explosives, rockets, and weaponized drones in the early hours of Friday morning.
According to military officials, four army vehicles were destroyed during the operation. One officer confirmed that the attack was carried out by a terrorist group that used a combination of rocket-propelled grenades and explosive-laden drones.
A military report later stated that six soldiers were killed and six others wounded, while the Nigerian Army’s official statement gave a lower toll, reporting four soldiers dead. The army added that the attackers were repelled with the support of reinforcements from a nearby base.
The assault also led to the temporary closure of the highway connecting Maiduguri and Damaturu, the capital of neighboring Yobe State, as army engineers worked to remove explosives planted by the militants along the route.
The region has witnessed a surge in extremist violence over the past decade, with militant groups continuing to target military installations and civilians despite ongoing counterterrorism operations.
