At least seven people were killed after a small private aircraft crashed into a football field area in central Mexico while attempting an emergency landing, local authorities said on Monday.

The crash occurred in the industrial zone of San Mateo Atenco, approximately five kilometres from Toluca International Airport and around 50 kilometres west of Mexico City. The aircraft had departed from the Pacific coastal city of Acapulco earlier in the day.

According to Adrian Hernandez, civil protection coordinator for the State of Mexico, the plane was carrying eight passengers along with a two-member crew. However, only seven bodies had been recovered several hours after the incident, raising uncertainty over the fate of one individual.

Preliminary assessments suggest the aircraft attempted to land on a football pitch but struck the metal roof of a nearby commercial building, triggering a large fire. Emergency services responded quickly, and investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.

San Mateo Atenco mayor Ana Muniz said the fire forced the evacuation of around 130 people from the surrounding area as a safety precaution.

Authorities have not yet released details about the identities of the victims or the circumstances that led to the emergency landing attempt.
