In a recent earthquake that struck the southern part of the Philippines, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported the tragic loss of 7 lives.
Reports indicated that two individuals remain missing, while two others sustained injuries during the earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 6.8.
The earthquake occurred off the coast of Sarangani Island in the Davao Occidental province on Friday.
According to Edgar Posadas, the spokesperson for the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, "Most of the victims were buried under debris."
Additionally, at least 60 houses and 32 other structures were damaged as a result of the quake.
It's important to note that the Philippines is located within the Pacific Ring of Fire, where approximately 90% of the world's earthquakes occur.
The country has experienced some of the most powerful earthquakes in history, with a devastating earthquake in July 1990 claiming the lives of over 2,400 people on Luzon Island, in the northern part of the country.
This earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8.
The NDRRMC and local authorities are actively engaged in rescue and relief efforts in the affected areas, aiming to provide assistance and support to those affected by the earthquake.
