At least seven people were killed in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo after militants linked to ISIS launched an attack near the city of Beni, triggering clashes with security forces.
According to the Congolese military, fighters from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which has pledged allegiance to ISIS, raided an area between Ngadi and Mavivi in North Kivu province overnight. Six civilians were killed and one soldier died during operations against the attackers.
Local residents said the militants entered a camp late at night, forcing people from their homes before carrying out killings. Several bodies reportedly remain in nearby forests due to ongoing security concerns.
The attack sparked protests in Beni, where residents accused the army of failing to protect civilians. Police dispersed demonstrators with tear gas.
Despite a joint military operation launched by the armies of DR Congo and Uganda in 2021, the ADF continues to carry out deadly attacks across the mineral-rich eastern region.
