Seven people were killed and 44 others injured after an ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing plant in Tamil Nadu, according to Indian police.

Authorities said the leak originated from a seafood processing unit before spreading rapidly into nearby residential areas, exposing local residents to the toxic gas.

All 44 injured victims were taken to hospital for treatment, with nine reported to be in critical condition.

Emergency teams responded to contain the leak and assist affected residents, while officials launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.

The accident has renewed concerns over industrial safety standards in India, where chemical leaks and factory-related incidents continue to pose risks to workers and surrounding communities.
