The authorities of 6th of October City Development Authority announced the replacement of 72 tuk-tuk vehicles as part of an ongoing plan to modernize public transport and eliminate informal mobility patterns within the city.
The initiative is being implemented under directives from Egypt’s housing leadership and the city’s development authority, as part of a broader national strategy to improve transport systems in new urban communities and enhance overall quality of life.
According to the authority, the replacement scheme aims to introduce more regulated and licensed transport alternatives, reduce traffic congestion, and improve the city’s urban appearance. Officials said the program is designed to gradually phase out unregulated tuk-tuks in favor of more organized and safer vehicles.
The process includes several stages, beginning with the registration of each vehicle and its owner, followed by technical inspections to assess the condition of the tuk-tuk, completion of required legal documentation, and finally the handover of the old vehicle in exchange for a modern alternative.
Nader Zafaar said the authority is working to accelerate implementation and simplify procedures for residents, while intensifying field monitoring to ensure compliance. He emphasized that the program will continue until all tuk-tuks within the city are fully replaced.
He also urged vehicle owners to participate in the scheme and regularize their status, warning that strict measures will be taken against non-compliant operators. These measures may include vehicle seizure in cases of continued violations or failure to meet the specified deadlines.
The authority stressed that the initiative is part of wider efforts to maintain the city’s planned urban character, improve traffic discipline, and support the state’s vision of developing organized, modern, and informal-free urban areas.
