A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake has jolted Western Afghanistan, occurring just days after two similarly powerful quakes claimed over 1,200 lives.

The epicenter of the quake was 28 kilometers (17.39 miles) northwest of Herāt, Afghanistan, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), responsible for global earthquake monitoring.

The quake struck at 12:41 a.m. UTC on Wednesday, with no immediate details available regarding its impact.

Shortly thereafter, a 5.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in the same vicinity. Furthermore, a 4.1 magnitude quake was recorded in Chahār Burj, situated southeast of Herāt, according to USGS data.

The death toll from the devastating earthquakes that recently shook western Afghanistan has risen significantly, with at least 1,294 fatalities and over 1,600 reported injuries, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the World Health Organization.
