A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Peru early Sunday, with seismic centers reporting readings between 6.1 and 6.2.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) stated that the quake’s epicenter was located 94 kilometers southeast of Trujillo, a city with over 700,000 residents, at a depth of roughly 30 to 66 kilometers, which helped limit surface damage.
Both EMSC and Italy’s INGV recorded the tremor at 02:51 UTC (about 06:12 Moscow time). No tsunami warning was issued.
Authorities have not reported any injuries or structural damage, consistent with the quake’s depth reducing its impact in the seismically active Pacific “Ring of Fire” region.
Peru frequently experiences earthquakes, but this event caused far less disruption compared with previous, more powerful tremors.
