Heavy snowfall and torrential rain have killed at least 61 people across Afghanistan over the past three days, according to preliminary figures released on Saturday by the country’s disaster authorities.
The National Disaster Management Authority said the extreme weather has also left 110 people injured and caused damage or total destruction to 458 homes.
Most of the casualties and structural damage were reported in northern and central provinces, where severe winter conditions have brought widespread flooding, collapsing buildings and blocked transport routes. The authority shared a damage assessment map on the social media platform X, highlighting the areas worst affected.
Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to extreme weather, with heavy snow, flash floods and seasonal rains frequently triggering humanitarian crises, particularly in remote regions with fragile infrastructure. Officials warned that the toll could rise as assessments continue and rescue teams reach isolated communities.
Search and relief operations are ongoing, while authorities have urged residents in affected areas to take precautions as harsh weather conditions are expected to persist.
