2020 has been quite a year, and though the fashion industry—like nearly every industry—has faced major hardship over the past twelve months, yet there were still plenty of moments to highlight.
1- Canceled Physical Events
Coronavirus brought the world to a stop at the beginning of the year when none of us was sure whether the pandemic was merely temporary.
As the world continued to be heavily affected by the pandemic, French fashion’s governing body, the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode officially canceled the men’s and couture fashion weeks in March. Other big fashion events such as the Met Gala and London Fashion Week also moved to stream their shows, showcasing a new way of exhibiting fashion.

Changes at Fashion Houses
Fashion houses also experienced changes, bringing significant, innovative impact on the fashion industry, such as Kim Jones being named the new artistic director of haute couture, ready-to-wear and fur collections at Fendi, while remaining as the artistic director of Dior Men, Raf Simons joining Prada, and Clare Waight Keller leaving Givenchy, and Matthew Williams, taking the helm of Givenchy as creative director.
Media Shifts
Following the death of George Floyd back in May, a series of protests broke out and highlighted the injustices faced by people of color, as well as changes were made in publishing companies to reflect on their hiring methods, leading to resignations from several publishing executives including Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of US Vogue, who apologized over her problematic hiring practices over a public statement.
In June, Samira Nasr was announced as the new editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar, becoming the first black editor-in-chief of the publication since its foundation, 153 years ago.
High Fashion PPE
As the pandemic swept the world, fashion designers banded together to do their part to help front-line workers by utilizing their supply chains to manufacture masks and other personal protective equipment in the face of a shortage.
Departed Legends
The fashion industry was devastated by the death of footwear legend, Sergio Rossi, who passed away in Italy at age 84 due to coronavirus in April.
In October, Japanese designer and founder of Kenzo, Kenzo Takada died at 81 from complications of the virus as well.
Memorable Moments
2020 was also filled with al there were still plenty of jaw-dropping moments that caught the world's attention, such as Jacquemus’s viral SS21 wheat field catwalk show that was held on a 600 meter-long wooden runway near Paris, to Dior and Valentino’s mesmerizing couture videos, and not to mention Harry Styles covering US Vogue’s December issue, becoming the magazine’s first-ever male cover star.
