The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that Somalia faces a worsening humanitarian crisis, with 5.98 million people expected to require humanitarian assistance in 2025.

The crisis is driven primarily by severe drought conditions, which have exacerbated food insecurity, malnutrition, and displacement. In response, the UN has launched a $1.43 billion humanitarian response plan for the year.

According to the UN report, at least 4.4 million people in Somalia are already experiencing acute food insecurity, while 1.6 million children are at risk of severe malnutrition by July 2025.

The situation is further deteriorating due to prolonged dry spells, particularly in southern and central regions, following poor rainfall performance since October.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) predicts that the upcoming Gu rainy season (April–June) will also see below-average rainfall across much of the country, alongside above-average temperatures, worsening the crisis.

With drought conditions expected to deteriorate further through January 2025, the UN is calling for urgent humanitarian assistance and long-term resilience measures, including well-drilling, livestock support, and sustainable water management, to mitigate the impact of the crisis.
