At least six people were killed on Thursday in a violent clash between rival groups of gold miners in northwest Bolivia, according to police reports.
The deadly confrontation, which involved miners carrying dynamite, highlights the escalating territorial disputes among the country’s mining cooperatives.
The violence erupted at the Yani mining camp following a powerful explosion as competing groups fought over access to a gold mine near the mountainous town of Sorata, located approximately 150 kilometers northwest of the administrative capital, La Paz.
Colonel Gunther Agudo, a local police official, confirmed the incident, describing it as a rare but deadly escalation of tensions in the region. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the conflict as they work to restore order in the area.
