Six people were killed in a series of linked shooting incidents in the eastern part of the US state of Mississippi, authorities said on Saturday, as police confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody.

The shootings occurred in the town of West Point, near the border with the state of Alabama. Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said the attacks took place at three separate locations, describing the victims as “innocent lives lost to violence”.

In a statement posted on social media, Sheriff Scott confirmed that a suspect was being held and that there was no ongoing threat to the local community. Speaking to local broadcaster WTVA, he said all six fatalities were connected to the same sequence of events.

“I ask that you keep our victims and their families in your prayers,” Scott said, adding that law enforcement agencies were actively investigating the shootings and would provide further updates as information becomes available.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately release additional details in the early hours of Saturday but said a press conference would be held later in the day to outline the findings of the investigation.
