At least six people were killed and 46 others injured after a bus overturned on a highway in Brazil, authorities said Monday.

Fire officials in São Paulo reported that the accident occurred early Monday morning on the BR 153 highway near the city of Marília. Emergency responders transported dozens of injured passengers to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials have not yet released details on the severity of the injuries.

According to local media reports citing Brazil’s Federal Highway Police, the bus was carrying farm workers traveling from Maranhão in the northeast to Santa Catarina in southern Brazil for apple harvesting work.

The newspaper Folha de S.Paulo reported that the bus veered off the road and overturned after the left rear tire reportedly burst, causing the driver to lose control.

The fatal crash highlights ongoing road safety concerns in Brazil, where long distance transport of seasonal agricultural workers remains common across major highways. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
