At least six people have been confirmed dead and 25 others are missing after a bridge collapsed over the Indrayani River in Pune, western India, on Sunday.
The incident occurred in the popular tourist area of Kundmala, during peak monsoon season.
Despite warnings from authorities about the dangers of visiting riverbanks during the rains, the bridge remained a hotspot for pedestrians eager to witness the swelling river. Eyewitnesses reported that the structure gave way suddenly, sweeping people into the water.
Local residents had raised concerns about the bridge’s safety in previous years, even though it underwent maintenance and repairs four to five years ago. It had become an unofficial viewing platform during monsoon floods.
Emergency services launched a large-scale rescue operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police units, and civil defence teams. Fifteen ambulances, rescue trucks, and several boats have been deployed to the scene.
