A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s Bonin Islands on Thursday, with no reports of a tsunami threat or immediate damage.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, a relatively shallow level that can increase the likelihood of ground shaking being felt in nearby areas.

Japan remains one of the most seismically active countries in the world, located at the convergence of four major tectonic plates. The country is also home to around 100 active volcanoes, making it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Authorities have not reported casualties, but monitoring continues as part of standard safety protocols.
