LATAM Airlines reported that at least 50 passengers sustained injuries, mostly minor, on Monday due to a "technical issue" that caused "severe turbulence" during a flight from Sydney to Auckland.

The LATAM Airlines flight LA 800, operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, landed at Auckland Airport on Monday afternoon as scheduled, according to FlightAware.

Typically, the flight stops in Auckland en route to Santiago, the capital of Chile. An airline spokesperson told the New Zealand Herald that a "technical problem" on the flight affected some crew members and passengers, but did not provide further details.

A spokesperson for St. John Ambulance Hatu Hon Hospital informed Reuters that their ambulance treated around 50 individuals at the airport.

One of the injured is in critical condition, while the others sustained minor to moderate injuries.
